| The Bureau of Reclamation has conducted tours through the Hoover Dam and powerplant since 1937. Today, close to 1,000,000 visitors a year take the tour and millions more drive across the dam. The dam is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on US Highway 93 at the Nevada-Arizona border.
US 93 passes over the Colorado River via the top of Hoover Dam, which provides the only crossing point for hundreds of miles. A new by-pass is being built which will help with traffic between Phoenix and Las Vegas.
